Redcat Racing How to Series: Threading Old Antennas Through Antenna Tubes

If you’ve been into RC very long you’ve undoubtedly had to thread an antenna through an antenna tube. I can remember remember all too well, spending 20 minutes pushing a flimsy antenna from an AM receiver through a long antenna tube. Every ¼ inch gained, the antenna would kink and bunch up at the base of the tube, Argh.

Now with 2.4Ghz receivers becoming popular, the antennas are short and easy to thread through the short tube, but if you are still using AM and FM radios, this tip will help.

Here’s what you’ll need:

Thread, like that used to sew.
A vacuum with a hose. House hold or shop vacs will work.
A rag or shirt

  1. Measure the thread about a foot longer than the antenna tube.
  2. Tie one end of the thread around the tip of the antenna.
  3. Insert the free end of the thread into the antenna tube.
  4. Insert the other end of the antenna tube into the vacuum hose.
  5. Use the shirt or rag to rap around the hose and antenna tube to create a seal.
  6. Turn on the vacuum and such the thread through the antenna tube.
  7. Turn off the vacuum and carefully pull the thread and antenna through the antenna tube.
  8. Once the antenna is through the tube, untie the thread.

That’s it, you’re done. Insert the antenna into the proper holding slot on the vehicle and you’re done.
